JPG to AVIF Converter

Create genuine AVIF from a JPEG locally, with quality selection, correct orientation and a bounded local encoder fallback.

Input

Or drag one local image file here. File contents determine the format.

No image selected.

Choose one image. Files stay in this browser.

One static image. Up to 16 MiB and 12 million pixels, with each side no longer than 16,384 pixels. No files are uploaded. AVIF encoding: up to 4 million pixels, subject to the codec-inclusive estimated 256 MiB memory budget. A larger input file may need smaller dimensions. The conversion uses a local worker; Cancel stops that worker.

Output

No converted image yet.

When to use JPG to AVIF

Compare AVIF for a destination that accepts it. Re-encoding cannot recover detail already lost in JPEG; a smaller output is not guaranteed.

How to convert

  1. Choose or drop one local JPG image. Review the detected dimensions and file size.
  2. Choose the output quality.
  3. Select Convert to AVIF. Review the actual output preview, dimensions and file size, then download it.

What changes in the output?

An actual native AVIF encode probe checks MIME and signature. When the browser returns PNG instead, the separate single-thread jSquash 2.1.1 encoder loads locally; PNG is never renamed as AVIF. Output uses eight-bit AVIF with 4:4:4 sampling. AVIF encoding is limited to 4 million pixels and a conservative codec-inclusive 256 MiB memory estimate, so larger input files can require smaller dimensions even below that pixel cap. JPEG EXIF orientation is applied once. No multithreading or server-policy changes are required.

EXIF orientation is applied once to the pixels. Source metadata is not copied into the new file. Browser color conversion and an sRGB canvas may change embedded profile handling; this is not an archival color-preservation tool.

Image codec licenses, notices and source availability. Only a codec required by this conversion loads; files stay in this browser.

Limits, privacy and browser support

JPG, PNG and WebP use native browser decoders and encoders where an actual local probe succeeds. Unsupported encoders produce an error; a PNG fallback is never renamed as another format. Animated PNG and WebP are rejected by these static converters. Corrupted and unsupported variants can fail even when a filename looks correct.

The local service estimates processing memory and allows one job at a time. Very large dimensions or memory requirements are rejected before decoding. The estimate is not a measurement of peak browser memory. Encoding has a 30-second deadline and output is capped at 64 MiB. The worker, bitmap and canvas are released after each job. Preview and download URLs stay valid until replacement, reset or navigation, when they are revoked.

Your selected file and converted result stay in this browser. No automatic saving, background upload or remote conversion service is used.
